We skipped the light fandango 我倆輕舞於曼妙燈光裡 Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor 優雅地環繞著舞池 I was feeling kinda seasick But the crowd called out for more 但人群不斷喝采 The room was humming harder As the ceiling flew away When we called out for another drink The waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, as first just ghostly, Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, there's no reason And the truth is plain to see 且真相是顯而易見的 But I wandered through my playing cards And would not let her be 不致使她成為 One of sixteen vestal virgins 獻身神祇的女尼(不是護火貞女嗎?) Who were leaving for the coast And although my eyes were open They might have just as we've been closed
A whiter shade of pale Procol Harum (Keith Reid/Gary Brooker)
We skipped the light Fandango 我們跳著輕快的方丹哥舞 Turned cartwheels across the floor 側手翻越過地板 I was feeling kind of seasick But the crowd called out for more 但群眾吆喝著再來一些 The room was humming harder As the ceiling flew away When we called out for another drink The waiter brought a tray
* And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said there is no reason And the truth is plain to see 事實顯而易見 But I wandered through my playing cards And would not let her be 不允許她成為 One of sixteen vestal virgins 十六位灶神的貞僕之一 Who were leaving for the coast And although my eyes were open They might just as we've been closed (*)
She said "I'm home on shore leave" 她說:「我趁休假回家一趟。」 Though in truth we were at sea So I took her by the looking glass And forced her to agree Saying, "You must be the mermaid 並說:「妳一定是條 Who took Neptune for a ride" 擺了海神一道的美人魚」 But she smiled at me so sadly That my anger straight away died
If music be the food of love Then laughter is its queen And likewise if behind is in front Then dirt in truth is clean My mouth by then like cardboard Seemed to slip straight through my head So we crash-dived straightway quickly And attacked the ocean bed
2. the miller:儘管 S. Eliot的名詩〈The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock〉第124行的「I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each」。 6. 「If music be the food of love」:引自莎士比亞〈Twelfth Night〉第一幕的第一句: "If music be the food of love, play on; Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting, The appetite may sicken, and so die." 7.
