1950s,
Hong Kong’s economy size is very small, many poor households are experiencing hard times. Meanwhile,
Hong Kong have lots of street snacks to take care of them. Street snacks cost cheaper than restaurant and very popular in
Hong Kong. You just eat the snacks standing on the street after you buy them from the small restaurant without seat. Nowadays, you can find them in Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei.
There are many types of street snacks in
Hong Kong, such as curry fish balls, Steamed rice rolls, Eggette, Stinky tofu , Small Bowl Fin Soup, Sticky puddings with red beans, etc…

Fish balls are made with fish meat and usually boiled in a spicy curry sauce. Sold on a bamboo skewer with five fish balls. It is bouncy and chewy. Some people like eat with chili sauce, but please be careful of the sauce, it always drops on your clothes. Fish ball is one of the most popular street foods of
Hong Kong. Another cooking style is cooked fish balls with noodles and soup, I will introduce it in the topic of noodles.
Small Bowl Fin Soup
碗仔翅
As mentioned, 1950s
Hong Kong have lots of poor family, they can’t afford eating shark fin soup.
Some hawkers used simple ingredients like eggs, vermicelli, mushrooms and chicken meat cooked them like a sharks fin soup. Since it cost very cheap , it come up as
popular snack food very quickly. Nowadays, some hawkers will add vegetable and fish meat, although it doesn’t taste like real shark fin soup, it is full of
Hong Kong style. I always eat in winter, it is warm.
