Food additives may be divided in several groups; although there is some overlap between them. Main six categories of food additives are classified as preservatives, nutritional supplements, flavoring agents, colorings, texturing agents and miscellaneous.
Feed additives include feeding attractants, immunostimulants, prebiotics, probiotics, acidifiers, essential oils, or other inclusions. These additives are usually not required nutrients. Feed attractants enhance the ingestion of feeds.
Feed additives are products used in animal nutrition for purposes of improving the quality of feed and the quality of food from animal origin, or to improve the animals' performance and health, e.g. providing enhanced digestibility of the feed materials.
Feed additives include: Technological additives – e.g. preservatives, antioxidants, emulsifiers, acidity. regulators, silage additives. Sensory additives – e.g. flavours, colourants. Nutritional additives – e.g. vitamins, amino acids, trace elements.
Some of the most commonly used feed additives in animal rations include enzymes, pro- and prebiotics, antioxidants, antibiotic growth promoters, and coloring agents.
There are four general categories of food additives: nutritional additives, processing agents, preservatives, and sensory agents. These are not strict classifications, as many additives fall into more than one category.
EFSA recognizes five categories of feed additives including zootechnical (enzymes, probiotics, prebiotics, certain phyto- Page 2 9 Feed additives in poultry nutrition genics), nutritional (vitamins and amino acids), technologi- cal (organic acids, antioxidants, pellet binders etc.), sensory additives (flavors) and ...
Feed additives are compounds fed to feedlot cattle for reasons other than supplying nutrients. These compounds increase the rate of gain and feed efficiency of beef cattle, decreasing the cost of production and improving the profit potential of feedlot producers.

Additives are to be fully incorporated into a ratio & used in minimal quantities. Supplements may be incorporated into a ration, but may also be provided as a free choice option (e.g. a mineral block for cattle). A supplement may include a feed additive as an ingredient (such as trace minerals in a premix).
