Modern weaving is a contemporary take on traditional weaving, using portable looms that make it more accessible to anyone who's interested to learn.
Basic Weave Patterns Also called tabby weave, plain weave is the commonest weave pattern and by far the easiest to make. To make a plain weave, you only need to interlace the warp thread over the weft in a criss-cross pattern. This way, the warp thread moves under and over the weft thread.
The development of spinning and weaving began in ancient Egypt around 3400 before Christ (B.C). The tool originally used for weaving was the loom. From 2600 B.C. onwards, silk was spun and woven into silk in China.
Weaving is the process of crossing one group of threads, the weft, with a second group of threads, the warp, to make cloth or a decorative artwork. The warp are attached to the loom, the framework used to hold the threads. The weft moves under and over the warp threads.
1a : to form (cloth) by interlacing strands (as of yarn) specifically : to make (cloth) on a loom by interlacing warp and filling threads. b : to interlace (threads) into cloth. c : to make (something, such as a basket) by intertwining.
They have traditionally been thought of as good weaving yarns. Woolen spinning techniques, allow the twist to enter the drafting zone—the area of the fiber that is being drawn out. They are traditionally made from carded fiber that is of varying lengths and jumbled together. This gives the yarn a fuzzy appearance.
Interlaced weft (horizontal) and warp (vertical) yarns cross each other in a pattern of one over and one under. Because of the high number of (perpendicular) crossings, each intersecting thread gives maximum support to the adjacent threads. Plain weave is stronger and firmer than any other ordinary weave.
Plain weave is an extremely versatile fabric most commonly found in cotton clothing, bed linens, upholstery, and other strong fabrics with no stretch.
