The school mascot is a Titan. The school colors, blue, white and red, are a synthesis of the former colors of the three pre-1971 four-year high schools: blue (from G. W.), white (from Hammond), and red (T. C. W.). The Titans are best known for their football program, which the movie Remember the Titans was based upon.
In 1971, the Alexandria City School Board's decision to swiftly integrate the two upper grades of the two all-white high schools with the one all-black T.C. Williams happened amid racial unrest, riots and more subtle discomfort. This month is the 65th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Brown vs.
In the film, the school makes a very bold movement of combining both black colored students and white colored students so that they attend the same school. In addition, the school also demotes their successful white football coach to instead a black football coach, something that had never been done before.
